Alhaurín el Grande: the Heartbeat of Valle del Guadalhorce

Halfway between the coast and the mountains, in the very heart of the Guadalhorce Valley, lies Alhaurín el Grande, a town of more than 24,000 inhabitants that has managed to preserve the soul of a traditional village in Málaga.

Its name comes from the Arabic Alhaurín (the Alhaurinos), and the adjective el Grande (“the Great”) was added by the Catholic Monarchs to distinguish it from its neighbour, Alhaurín de la Torre.

From various points around town, you can take in sweeping views of mountain ridge, or catch glimpses of the sea glimmering in the distance. It’s the kind of place where you can spend your morning hiking a mountain trail and your afternoon sipping coffee in a sunny plaza.

A Brief Stroll through Alhaurin’s history

Alhaurín’s roots run deep, fromearly Iberian settlements to Roman roads and aqueducts, through centuries of Moorish agriculture and, later, the Christian Reconquest. Each era left something behind.

You’ll see it in the winding streets and sun-washed façades. In the Arco del Cobertizo, one of the last Moorish arches still standing. In the Church of the Incarnation, built by the Catholic Monarchs on the foundations of an old mosque. And high above, the Castillo de la Mota, a small but charming reconstruction that highlights the town’s medieval heritage.

But Alhaurín’s charm isn’t just in its history. Keep reading to learn about many places you can visit, the gastronomy you can enjoy there, and more!
